Some horse rugs protect the whole back, others only a small but crucial area. The kidney cover belongs to the second group — and that's exactly what makes it the better choice in certain situations.
Why the kidney area specifically?
The lumbar and kidney area carries large but comparatively thinly covered muscle — during warm-up it cools down faster than the rest of the back. When cold wind hits wet or clipped skin in this area, the muscle reflexively tenses up. Warming up your horse in cold weather without protection risks exactly this kind of tension in the lower back. A kidney cover keeps the muscle warm during warm-up and right after it — before joints and ligaments are properly prepared for work.
Kidney cover, cooler rug, or quarter sheet?
All three protect the back, but at different times:
- Kidney cover: small, covers only the lumbar and kidney area. That's exactly why it can be worn while riding without getting in your or your horse's way — ideal for warming up, for riding a horse dry, or for short, cool hacks.
- Cooler rug: covers the whole horse, but only while standing after work. Not suitable for riding — your horse could get tangled in it, and you'd have no secure seat in the saddle.
- Quarter sheet: covers more of the horse than the kidney cover and is designed for longer, colder, or wet hacks — some versions even keep the rider's thighs warm.
For short, cool moments during warm-up or riding dry, the kidney cover is enough; for longer hacks in cold or wet weather, the quarter sheet is the better choice.
Material: boiled wool
Our kidney cover is made of 100% boiled wool — temperature-regulating, breathable, and moisture-wicking. It absorbs moisture without quickly feeling wet, keeping a pleasantly dry climate on the horse's back. Thanks to its natural lanolin, boiled wool is also water- and dirt-repellent and low-odour.
Care
Boiled wool rugs can be washed 1–2 times a year on a cold wool cycle, with a re-fatting wool detergent. Coarse dirt can usually just be brushed out.
Who is a kidney cover worth it for?
A kidney cover suits any horse that's warmed up or ridden dry in cool temperatures — there's no particular restriction here regardless of discipline or horse type.
