The most important measurements for a horse rug are the back length and side depth. On horses with standard proportions, the overall length and neck width can usually be derived from these measurements. If your horse is particularly narrow, tall or broad, taking individual measurements can be worthwhile to achieve the best possible fit.

For quarter sheets and exercise sheets, the measurement from the saddle to the base of the tail and the side depth are decisive. With exercise sheets, the saddle cut-out may also be important for certain saddle shapes.

Back length and side depth are the key measurements for a saddle pad. For our Relief models, first measure as if there were no withers cut-out.

Important when measuring the back length: The saddle pad should finish approximately 3 cm behind the saddle. It must not be too long, as this can restrict the horse’s movement. It must also not be too short or end under the saddle, as this can create pressure points. In our experience, a back length of 55 cm fits the vast majority of saddles.

Important when measuring the side depth: The saddle pad, including the girth loops, should end below the saddle flap. With saddles that have long girth billets, make sure the girth does not lie on top of the saddle pad. To avoid pressure points, the girth buckles should always sit below the saddle pad.

Important when measuring the withers cut-out: This may look like the most complicated measurement, but it is actually the simplest. Due to our construction method, small measuring deviations are not a problem. In our experience, a cut-out of around 15 cm is sufficient for most horses.

To determine the measurements, you can use another saddle pad. Place it on your horse with the saddle and mark all the points described above with chalk. Then lay the saddle pad flat on the floor and measure the marked points.
